In an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Theresa May has reaffirmed her commitment to the HS2 rail link, putting an end to rumours that the upcoming Conservative manifesto would contain plans to scrap the project.
Government projections predict an overall cost of £55 billion, which critics believe could be better spent elsewhere.
Mrs. May however, has called HS2 ‘an important infrastructure project for our country’, with phase one expected to be opened in Birmingham in 2026, and phase two scheduled for completion by 2032.
Whether this announcement by Mrs. May will have any effect on election results in the region remains to be seen.
