Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has suggested the Brexiteers in government do not want a second referendum because ‘they fear they would lose it’.
Mr. Clegg has strongly opposed the decision to leave, repeatedly warning the public about the dangers of a ‘hard’ Brexit, saying that ‘it is already hurting the very people who need most help in society’, and ‘we can’t have a strong economy and a hard Brexit’.
The Liberal Democrats would like to have a referendum on the terms of a Brexit deal, as they believe the British public should have the final say.
This is at odds with Prime Minister May’s belief that ‘Brexit means Brexit’.
