Former Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman is challenging a court ruling which bans him from standing for election. In 2015, Mr. Rahman was removed from office, after being found guilty of election fraud, having used numerous underhand tactics, such as bribery, false statements against rivals, and spiritual influence.
He now intends to apply for a judicial review of the case, hoping to get the five year ban overturned, or to otherwise face a jury trial to clear his name.
Mr. Rahman’s Barrister Paul Bowen QC said: ‘The fact that the election court has found you guilty doesn’t have to mean you’re found guilty in the criminal court’.
