Theresa May has suggested the Brexit divorce bill could apply to the EU too, citing Britain’s share of the European Investment Bank as an example of assets that may need to be divided.
The UK’s share of the bank is approximately 16%, which is worth £10 billion, something which may strengthen Britain’s position at the negotiating table.
Over recent weeks, the idea of a Brexit divorce bill has been discussed at length, with a range of figures being quoted, from anywhere between £30 and £85 billion, although some have said Britain could walk away without paying a penny, as such a bill would be legally unenforceable.
