President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has defended his decision to declare martial law on the island of Mindanao, saying:
‘Until the police and the armed forces say the Philippines is safe, this martial law will continue. I will not listen to others. The Supreme Court, congress, they are not here’.
This comes after guided rockets were used to target the ISIS affiliated ‘Maute Group’, who are currently active in the city of Marawi.
President Duterte has reached out to other separatist groups, offering them the ‘same pay and privileges’ as soldiers if they agree to fight for him.
