Defence Secretary Michal Fallon has said that the £1 billion deal with the DUP does not signal the end of austerity.
‘We all understand that austerity is never over until we’ve cleared the deficit’.
‘We’ve done a huge amount of work over the last seven years, getting rid of a large chunk of the deficit, but it’s still there. We still have to have fiscal controls. You’re still going to see that kind of discipline’.
‘The DUP is not getting this money. The money is going to the people of Northern Ireland’.
‘This is £1 billion that will go to improving the infrastructure of the province, growing the private economy of the province, and ensuring its employment rate – which is behind Wales and Scotland – catches up’.
