Iain Duncan Smith has responded to Philip Hammond’s suggestion that cabinet ministers were briefing against him, saying:
‘All I would say to my colleagues is ‘just for once, shut up for God’s sake, and let everyone else get on with the business of governing.’
‘There’s not going to be a leadership election. I can absolutely promise you money on that’.
‘There is no mood in the Conservative Party for a leadership election’.
‘There’s an unusual thing happening at the moment, it’s called Brexit, there’s a timetable to it, and you cannot afford for that timetable to be broken into by a Conservative leadership election’.
‘We have to get through that first and foremost’.
