‘Happy BBC salary day. I blame my agent and the other TV channels that pay more. Now where did I put my tin helmet?’

‘This whole BBC salary exposure business is an absolute outrage…I mean how can Chris Evans be on more than me?’

Other notable high earners include:

Chris Evans on £2.2 million

Jeremy Vine on £750,000

Huw Edwards on £600,000

Alan Shearer on £450,000

BBC Director General Lord Hall defended these figures, saying:

‘I completely understand that to lots and lots of people these are very large sums, but we are a global broadcaster in a very competitive market’.
