22 MPs have taken language classes at a cost of £20,000 to the taxpayer, the most high profile being Alex Salmond, who Spent £409.50 on French lessons.
A Commons spokesman defended the practice, saying:
‘MPs are entitled to undertake language training in accordance with their Parliamentary duties’
‘Annual costs depend on the number of MPs who decide to take up the offer’.
The Taxpayers’ Alliance responded, saying:
‘Clearly some MPs still don’t get it’.
‘If they want to learn another language then they should pay for classes themselves and not expect taxpayers to pick up the bill’
‘Maybe instead of language lessons, MPs should be taught about where the money comes from to pay for their perks’.
