Ken Clarke has said that last year’s referendum result was caused by ‘right-wing politicians’ reacting to ‘sensationalist headlines in the Daily Mail’, and that ‘In a modern, sophisticated country with a parliamentary democracy, you have to take a different approach’.
‘I believe in an open, meritocratic society, with a social conscience’.
Mr Clarke went on to say that even though a ‘wave of anger’ had swept away ‘the liberal establishment’, ‘I think the public will expect the political class to deal in a serious way with the complexities of the issue’.
‘I do think most of them also expect that the government and the political class will diminish the economic damage that they have caused by Brexit’.
